“This is an action movie where you get to be the action hero” – How PSVR’s Blood & Truth puts you in the leading role

“I think the London Heist is really our love letter as a studio for the Guy Ritchie/Cockney/Snatch/Lock, Stock type of films, and it was very much in this world,” Stuart Whyte, director of VR product development at Sony’s London studio, says of what was for many the standout demo of the VR Worlds range.

There’s a lot of action in this experience, but it takes the form of shootouts where you’re placed in a static point and have to defend from there. The upcoming Blood & Truth massively expands on this core gameplay functionality, while also deviating from that previous title. “Blood & Truth is still in London, but I don’t think of it that way,” says Stuart Whyte, “For us, Blood & Truth is very much inspired by our favorite action films. [but] this is not a guy ritchie movie […] it’s much more of an action movie where you become the action hero.

Playing one of the first missions as a soldier trained by SAS Ryan Marks, we definitely feel like one. As we explore Marks’ military background, we become familiar with our weapon handling and our very special skills, and from there it’s not long before we’re racing and shooting with the best of them.

Blood & Truth aims to combine the thrill of John Wick’s hyper-driven gun fu with explosive Bond-style set pieces and just a pinch of Die Hard humor. Although the developers were committed to fulfilling the fantasy of emulating each of the heroes of these film series and were less concerned with realism, they consulted former SAS soldier Kevin Godlington. “We didn’t engage with him to make it realistic because we didn’t mind too much, but [we engaged with him where it made sense to so] that he felt authentic. Whyte explains.

For example, Whyte cites the radio chatter throughout the first mission we play as a particular part of the storyline that was informed by Godlington’s experience, to the point that now the person Ryan Marks is in communication with during this part of the game is voiced by Godlington himself. His input was also instrumental in addressing some common issues for action movie fans: if you’re a trained SAS soldier and an armed bad guy walks into the room, why not just disarm them?

“[Kevin] showed our mocap director seven different ways to disarm someone with a gun, some of which were pretty scary! Whyte tells us, before explaining how Godlington provided directions to the actress playing one of your main adversaries, Kayla, how she should move in order to tell a highly trained officer that attempting to disarm her would be incredibly ill advised.

As Ryan Marks’ estranged family reunites in the aftermath of tragedy, we see firsthand what happens to those who try to upset them. You will be able to discover yourself on May 28.
